But I don't think the tracker analogy really holds, we had that feature in LimeWire and it was mostly garbage. Trackers on the other hand can provide the most popular content because they have total knowledge of what's available.

I couldn't find any example of anybody ever doing that before. We did something very similar for LimeWire in order to select on NAT-2-NAT transfers and it wasn't very pretty. You end up creating a virtual selector which delegates to the real selector for TCP channels.
