Difference between IMAP and POP3 is that IMAP manages mail stored on a server, while POP3, once fetched mail, deletes it from server. As SMTP server I use Postfix. For IMAP (I don’t use POP3 because I need access from multiple devices) I use Dovecot.

Originally it was spread using floppy disks and still gets shared by USB thumb drives. At the very top are extremely high speed private FTP servers. The fastest server I know of has a connection speed of 40 GBit/s and is operated by a FTP trading group. After that come 20 GBit/s private servers in switzerland and many more slower private servers as well as rented servers (which are less respected).
