Self hosting became a hobby of mine sometime around 2018. I originally started off hosting simple tools like Pi-hole , random dashboards, and monitoring tools like Grafana on a Raspberry Pi 4. In May of 2021 I retrofitted an old desktop to host on instead as the Pi was too getting too slow, and 6 months later I got a proper rack and bought a refurbished HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 server to put in it.

If you're really serious, you can try other options that cost more time and bandwidth, like downloading a whole directory instead of the files you're actually interested in (please go easy on the network). An early adventurer also suggested mixing in a few files you don't particularly like among your downloads or uploads - I guess that can situationally work too.
