Almost every CPU design improvement is done for the sake of performance, so if you aren't in there learning about and taking advantage of every one of them, you might as well stay out of the game. This is the fallacy of running around trying to find kernels to work with. The whitepaper may look great, and the designers may be enthusiastic; the project description may push all of the right buttons in terms of what you want a kernel to do.
