In Act Five, at Faust’s death, comes an abrupt revival of the wager, its wording, the question of his damnation or salvation, and in the final scene Gretchen intercedes for him. There are other more or less important links: the prefiguring of Helen in *Part I* in the ‘Witch’s Kitchen’ (2429 ff.); flight through the air by magic cloak or carpet (or barrel or balloon); Faust’s regrets that he is bound to Mephisto and necromancy (3241–6; 11403–7).
