I guess the idea was to have small groups focused on narrow topics sharing their stuff, just like in the historic p2p apps from the '00s., or private channels for friends. Just a warning in advance, because people often don't see the connection between optional channels feature and memory usage.

I find it to be pretty similar to GitHub (in terms of the UI), but better. It's awesome if you want to have a private instance of GitHub-like website for your own personal projects. I use it to build this website and develop many private software projects.
