This all results in centralization of control, meaning the companies hosting these services can do whatever they want because it’s their platform. There’s also the risk of them going down momentarily or permanently, which would be more catastrophic than a single decentralized service going down. If the decentralized service uses some manner of peer-to-peer architecture it is almost impossible to take it down making it very resilient to any fault.

It isn't a frequent problem though. It does do really well for telling me when things are down, and can also be used to have internal servers poll them so you can get an alert when the server goes down without having to expose any of it's services.
