When hearing about "Esoteric" lines of thought, I think of Isaac Newton who was (not only) obsessed with other things than the physical realm; Isaac was also deeply religious and concerned with the arangement of (ancient egyptian) temple rooms in relation to the cardinal directions, among planets and other things. Esotericism guided by the wrong initial conditions might diverge into useless trash thought though.
