Counting Revolutions Most cycle computers are just glorified pulse counters. They're wired to a sensor which usually consists of a reed switch (mounted on the bike's frame) and a magnet attached to the wheel. The switch closes as the magnetic field passes over it, completing the circuit and reopening again as the magnet passes away: The cycle computer simply applies a small voltage to the switch's input and counts how often energy is observed at the output.
