But a quick lookup revealed that a typical SSD in fact needs only the 5V rail, and what was that thing protruding from the top of my spares bin - well what do you know, a perfectly typical SSD! That left me with only the easier of the two problems. So I cut a regular SATA power connector off a dead power supply, grabbed a soldering iron, and well, if you're reading this it means it worked.
